Three Reasons why your Website needs Videos

10 Oct 2018
by: John Stoneman

Videos are now considered one of the best ways for people to engage with your website. Over the last few years there has been an incredibly fast move away from websites using just words and photos. Although words and photos are still important, videos are now a necessary feature for many websites.

Having at least one video on your website is a great way to tell your story and stand out from your competitors.

Here are three of the top reasons to why you need videos on your website:

videos for websites

1. Videos grab people's attention

People’s attention spans are becoming shorter. This is heightened by the increasing use of mobile phones. No matter how mobile friendly you make your website, it is still a bit cumbersome to scan through lots of words and photos. This is one of the reasons videos are becoming so popular.

In fact, YouTube has over 1.8 billion users every month. That’s a lot of people watching videos. This is just a bit less than the number of users on Facebook. They have just over 2 billion users every month.

2. Videos will help with your SEO

Google now displays videos on it’s search results. So if you have a video on your website, part of your SEO strategy should be to get your video showing up in search results for keywords you are focusing on.

Given that Google owns YouTube, it is not a surprise that an estimated 80% of the videos shown in search results are YouTube videos. This means that if you have a YouTube video you have a greater chance of it being shown in Google search results.

3. Videos are easy to install onto your website

It is important to remember that although you can install a video onto your website directly it is often better not to. This is because it will take up too much bandwith and slow down your website. Most people use either the YouTube or Vimeo platform for installing their video and then link them into the website. The presentation is almost identical, but you don’t have to worry about website bandwidth.

There are plenty of advantages in using YouTube. These include the fact that it is free and is very popular. YouTube’s main competitor Vimeo is also free to use. However, you need to pay a monthly subscription fee if you want certain features. In contrast to YouTubes 1.8 billion users per month, Vimeo has 170 million users.

If you want to restrict people viewing your videos then Vimeo could be the solution. For example, if you have a business that is building a membership base or selling online courses with videos then Vimeo is considered the better option. It can password protect your videos and restrict them to people who have paid for membership or bought your course. Vimeo can also restrict videos to your website, so people who want to watch them have to visit your website.
